Text Box: State offers free flu shots for South Dakota kids and teens
Gov. Mike Rounds announced today that the state will offer free flu shots for South Dakotans aged 6 months through 18 years, beginning with the 2007-2008 season.
"Research shows that infants and young children are at high risk for complications from influenza.  We also know that kids of all ages can help spread the flu within schools and communities," said Gov. Rounds.  "Immunizing our kids will not only protect them but will help keep the rest of us healthy as well."
During South Dakota's 2006-2007 influenza season, 70% of flu cases were 0-10 years of age and 43% of flu-related hospitalizations were 0-10 years old.
A list of childhood vaccine providers in South dakota can be found on the departments web site at:  http://doh.sd.gov/LocalOffices/Vaccine.aspx.  More information about influenza prevention can be found at http://flu.sd.gov.
