Course Title:                        “Apprenticeship Early Childhood Supplemental Training”

Course Description:
By completing this course, early childhood professionals will gain essential knowledge and skills that will support their ability to successfully complete the requirements of the South Dakota Early Care and Education Apprenticeship Program.  Class activities will promote the students’ knowledge of child nutrition, safety and development.  Students will gain new insight that will enhance their ability to provide developmentally appropriate care and education for children (birth through 12 years of age).  
This course is a 10 week course that runs every January and June.  Classes are held at Presentation College and over DDN to other sites as arranged.  Classes are 2.5 hours in length.  Next session to Start Jan. 5th, 2009.

Learning Outcomes:
As a requirement of completion fro this course, each student will:
1.     Complete a written observation of food safety practices within her or his early childhood program. 
2.     Complete a written “Safety Checklist for Active Play Areas’ and “Safety Improvement Plan” in order to assess her or his own ability to provide a safe and healthy program environment for children.
3.     Complete a 4-hour CPR course and provide evidence of a current CPR certificate.
4.     Conduct an Internet search focused on a child development topic that she/he is interested in and complete a written summary of the findings.
5.     Develop a written philosophy of early care and education that is based on the contribution of theorists who are considered during this course.
6.     Locate and review a research article that pertains to school-age care and write a one-page reaction paper.
7.     Develop a sample activity plan that is developmentally appropriate for children attending an out-of-school-time program.
